IRVINE, Calif. (March 12, 2012) - Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today announced the "MyMazda" Service app for Mazda owners with Android-compatible devices. The app is now available for download at the Google Play Store, formerly known as the Android Market.

"MyMazda," already available on iTunes, was one of the first automotive apps of its kind to provide Mazda owners with real-time information about their vehicle. The free “MyMazda” app provides easy access to service offers personalized to their vehicle, scheduled maintenance reminders, factory maintenance schedules and other information about their vehicle in one simple app.

As Android is the world's No.1 smartphone operating system, the "MyMazda" app is available to more Mazda owners in addition to the app released on iTunes late last year. The app features the ability to scan vehicle identification numbers (VINs) when adding new vehicles to the application, making the app set-up and personalization process effortless. Mazda owners can update their contact information and upload personal vehicle photos for each vehicle they register.

Using the vehicle locator feature, locating your vehicle such as in a large parking lot, has become even more convenient using the “MyMazda” app. Owners can now add photos to the vehicle locator feature, ensuring a quick return to their vehicle utilizing GPS and visual cues in the photos.

Additionally, the "MyMazda" app is linked with the “Mazda Assist” app. Designed to help Mazda drivers obtain immediate roadside assistance, should they find themselves with a flat tire, out of gas, locked out of their car or in need of a tow due to a mechanical failure. The app puts drivers directly in touch with a roadside assistance agent who can quickly dispatch reliable and professional roadside assistance to the vehicle's exact location via GPS-enabled technology, anytime. Drivers are given estimated time of arrival (ETA) and Service Provider information throughout the roadside event. The “Mazda Assist” app is free download and available on both iTunes and the Google Play Store.

Expected to go on sale in early Spring 2012, the compact crossover SUV offers the best highway fuel economy of any SUV sold in North America at 35 miles per gallon (mpg) and features class-leading overall fuel economy performance versus its direct competitors.

The 2013 CX-5 is equipped with a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine, which features a 13:1 compression ratio - the highest of any mass-produced car in the world - and delivers 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. Available with a SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission, the vehicle has a 2,000-pound towing capacity as well as an all-new active torque split all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Mazda's first vehicle fully engrained with SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, the brand's breakthrough engineering and manufacturing approach to its next generation of vehicles, CX-5 offers unprecedented non-hybrid best-in-class fuel economy for all transmission and drivetrain configurations.

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) will unveil its 2012 MX-5 Miata Special Edition at the upcoming 2012 Chicago Auto Show. The limited-run model features a black-only Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) - the first time a non-body-colored hard top is available in North America - as well as other exclusivities such as two new exterior colors, new 17-inch black gunmetal alloy wheels, black exterior accents, black heated leather seats and piano black interior finishes.

The MX-5 Miata is the world's best-selling two-seat roadster with more than 900,000 produced, and made its global debut at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989. The MX-5 Special Edition continues the sports car's history of being a dynamically-engineered, enthusiast-approved roadster whose price doesn't discriminate and whose luxuries are not stripped.

Mazda is pleased to announce the updated 2012MY Mazda3. With this model year, Mazda3 continues to offer class-leading interior and exterior design; fun to drive handling and performance; superb quality and craftsmanship; and innovative standard and optional equipment.

Key changes for 2012 include: all-new front fascia and updated interior styling; two new exterior colors; new wheel designs; and available segment-exclusive Blind Spot Monitoring System.

Finally, as Robert Davis mentioned in his July 20^th letter, the order forms released today contain the product structure for the initial 2012 Mazda3 combinations. The model code has an “R” designation to differentiate the initial 12MY non-SKYACTIV^® model line-up. For example, the model code for a 2012MY Mazda3i (2.0L 4-door) Sport A/T is M3S RI A. In addition, the Monroney window label will include an “(R)” at the end of the model description line: 2012 MAZDA3 I 4-DOOR SPORT (R)

Test Drive: Mazdaspeed 3 so cool it’s smokin’

If youth is wasted on the young, then what about youth cars?

Do today’s supersonic youth, with their big dreams, slim wallets and fast-twitch reflexes, know how good they have it?

That curmudgeonly thought sprang to mind when I drove the new Mazdaspeed 3.

As a modern pocket rocket — a performance-modified version of a budget car — this hot Mazda owes a generational debt to models like the Volkswagen GTI and Honda Civic Si, cars that I drove in the ’80s.

But those relatively primitive front-drive hatchbacks now look feeble compared with their muscular descendants. A zero-to-60 run in the mid-nine seconds seemed quick when Duran Duran was at its Aqua Netted peak. The Mazda takes 5.6 seconds, according to Motor Trend, faster than many Corvettes and Porsche 911s of the ’80s.

There’s no comparison in top speeds, either. The seminal hot hatches topped out around 110 or 115 miles an hour. The Mazdaspeed smacks 155, and would be faster if not for its electronic limiter. The turbocharged 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine whips up 263 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, more than double the output of its progenitors.

And while inflation has had its way with all cars, the Mazdaspeed’s $23,945 base price makes it a bargain even among today’s sport compacts.

The Mazdaspeed is girded with high-strength steel and gusseted with thicker metal and adhesive bonding around key welds and suspension mounting points than on the standard Mazda 3. Next come stiffer springs and shock absorbers. Add larger brakes and anti-roll bars, fat 18-inch 40-series performance tires, a new fresh-air scoop in the hood and the obligatory rear wing — the stylistic equivalent of a backward baseball cap — and you’re ready to pester Boomer elders in their premium-spread BMWs and Nissan Zs.

That attitude is encouraged inside with speckled red cabin trim and aluminum pedals. But it looks as though Mazda cut corners on the seats, which are supportive but lack the thickly bolstered aftermarket look of the previous generation.

While the engine output is unchanged for 2010, the 6-speed manual transmission (no automatic is offered) features taller gearing. The engine’s direct fuel injection system helps cool the air and fuel charge, allowing solid turbo boost — a peak of 15.5 pounds per square inch. Press the gas pedal in any gear and the Mazda exhibits a few beats of turbo lag before catapulting ahead like no compact this side of a Mitsubishi Evolution or Subaru WRX STI.

Fuel economy drops, naturally: The rating is 18 miles a gallon in the city and 25 on the highway, compared with 21/29 for the Mazda 3 2.5. Premium fuel is recommended for the Mazdaspeed version.

Some critics suggest that the Mazdaspeed 3 should have all-wheel drive to put it on equal footing with the Evo and WRX. I’d insist there’s room in the compact corral for front-drive cars. Eschewing all-wheel drive helps keep the price far below not only the Evo and WRX, but the front-drive Volkswagen GTI, too. The burning red Mazdaspeed 3 I tested cost $25,840 after adding in the $1,895 tech package, which included a Bose audio system, GPS navigation and keyless entry.

The Mazda does display some torque steer under hard throttle, as the overtaxed front tires send twitches through the steering wheel.

Yet the Mazda combines a limited-slip differential with electronic monitoring of wheelspin and steering-wheel angle to dial back power in the lower gears, holding torque steer well below wrist-snapping levels. Hey, it’s supposed to be a wild child; you want seamless, buy an Audi.

On clogged urban streets, the Mazdaspeed 3 can become a bit of a pain, all high-strung and impatient.

Despite Mazda’s claims of improved ride quality, deep potholes produced the kind of suspension crashes that make you see stars. But the Mazdaspeed 3 comes radiantly alive on open roads, where I was again boggled by its combination of attack-dog bravado and sophisticated handling.

The best thing about the Mazdaspeed 3?

Unlike some bewinged youth cars, it stays on this side of tasteful. It is frenetic enough to coax out the inner adolescent — but not so Jetsons-cartoonish that drivers over 30 will be embarrassed by it.

The Mazda3 was awarded the top safety pick rating for a small car by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) after earning the top rating for strength in rollover crashes. The Mazda3, which previously earned good ratings for front, side, and rear crash protection, is the Mazda’s first car designated as a Top Safety Pick since the Institute made the criteria more strict by including a requirement for a good rating in the roof strength test.

Mazda's new concept will be a compact urban SUV. With a styling theme thought up by Mazda's new design chief Ikuo Maeda, called Kodo that can also be seen on the Shinari race car concept. The Minagi will also have Mazda's SKYACTIVE technology which features smaller, efficient engines and transmissions, plus a greater use of strong lightweight materials. It is scheduled to be unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show in March. We like that it kind of looks like an RX-8 SUV version.
